RE: How to recover when your BlackBerry is stolen...
Dear Friend,
When your BlackBerry is lost or stolen you can probably replace it for under $500...
...but that's only a small part of your problem.
- According to the Gartner Group, the cost of a lost or stolen PDA is more like $2,500. Most of that cost goes to recoup the data on the lost PDA. And, of course that's only in those cases where the data could be recovered.
- Even more troubling are the statistics for theft and loss of smartphones and PDAs. In the UK alone, CNET reported in 2007 that more than 2 million phones were stolen. That's a phone every 12 seconds.
- And they also reported that in Sydney, Australia, 13,200 mobile phones were left in taxis during a six month period.
If you think this can't happen to you, consider what happened to some White House Staffers during a 2008 meeting between President Bush and Mexican President Calderon.
According to this Fox News report, an aide to President Calderon stole six White House BlackBerries. Only quick action by the secret service caught up with this aide - seconds before he claimed diplomatic immunity and boarded a plane. Had they not caught him, these BlackBerries - and whatever was on them - would have been lost forever.
And it's not a one-time thing. Consider this...
- In 2008, according to an article in the London Sunday Times, UK Prime Minster Gordon Brown had a similiar problem while visiting China. While he was there, one of his aides had his BlackBerry stolen in what looks like a sex-for-secrets scandal.
- Closer to home, in 2009, the Associated Press reported 67 computers and 1 BlackBerry went missing from Los Alamos National Laboratory - and no one knows what happened to any of them.It is not known what classified documents were on the computers or the BlackBerry. This theft happened even though Los Alamos has some of the tightest security as any facility in the country. What's more the theft happened even though the penalty for unauthorized removal and retention of classified materials carries a maximum sentence of a year in prison and up to a $100,000 fine.
The point is: if highly secure environments like this can't protect against these type of thefts...
...how secure is your home or office?
For example, consider how easy it was for these pickpockets to steal this cell phone...

It even happened to Naomi Campbell...
- In 2007, at the Led Zepellin reunion concert, theives snatched Ms. Campbell's purse which contained her BlackBerry. It was full of A-List celebrities' phone numbers. How would you like to call celebrities like Mick Jagger and tell him he had to change his phone number?
And Ms. Campbell is not alone.
- In 2005, Paris Hilton's cell phone was hacked into. Her address book, full of emails and phone numbers of celebrities like Eminem, Vin Diesel and Christina Aguilera were posted online. Almost immediately, all of her celebrity friends were being crank called. Can you imagine being responsible for all of this?
- Finally, in 2008, Prince Harry of England had his cell phone stolen in Africa while doing charity work. In his case, he got it back. (I'll explain how in a minute.) Can you imagine the consequences if he hadn't?

In other words, losing your BlackBerry...
...will wreak havoc on your life
What's more, losing your BlackBerry or having it stolen can have far-reaching consequences. For example, according to a 2008 survey by DTI/Price Waterhouse Coopers...
...70 percent of small businesses that experience a major data loss go out of business within a year
The bottom line - for all of these reasons - is that you must:
- Use GPS (if your BlackBerry has it) to find your lost device
- Assist authorities in identifying your thief
However, until now the problem for BlackBerry users has been that a lost or stolen BlackBerry meant utter disaster. That's why...

...I invented the BlackBerry ER
You see, five years ago we created PocketMac for BlackBerry. This was the first software that opened the "always on" BlackBerry world to Mac users.
It became so popular and created such buzz that Research In Motion - the makers of BlackBerry - licensed it from us.
But while PocketMac for BlackBerry was a major breakthrough in the Mac world, it couldn't...
...help BlackBerry users recover quickly if a BlackBerry were lost or stolen

BlackBerry ER changes all of that. Here's what it does...
It "finds" the crook who has your phone and virtually hands him over to the police...
As soon as you know your device is missing and you've notified your carrier of your loss, it's time to catch the person who stole your phone.
BlackBerry ER will tell you everything you need to know about the thief - all without him knowing. Here's how it works...
When your device is stolen, a common technique for thieves is to replace your SIM card (that's the tiny plastic card that tells the carrier who you are) with his own.
The moment this happens, BlackBerry ER sends a text message to a designated back-up cell phone of your choice. The text message includes:
- The thief's phone number
- The unique ID number for his SIM card (also known as the IMSI)
- And the thief's current location (using your device's GPS capabilities)
Preview Of BlackBerry ER In Action
Once you have this data, you can file a police report. The police then have the first steps for finding, arresting and convicting the thief who ruined your day.
What the press says about BlackBerry ER...
"What Blackberry ER does is relatively simple- when some evil person takes your Blackberry, they will generally change the SIM card. Once they do, the Blackberry sends a signal to a designated cell phone with enough information to help police recover the phone.
Does it work? It seems to do a perfectly good job based on most reports." -- The Gadgeteer
"If you use a BlackBerry for business, you’d probably no sooner leave the house without it than your wallet or car keys. But should someone steal your trusty BlackBerry, the chances of seeing it again are usually close to zero.
That’s where PocketMac’s BlackBerry ER utility ($14.97) can help by increasing the odds of recovery. When installed on a BlackBerry that gets stolen, this utility provides information about the phone’s possessor and whereabouts, which you then supply to the police
...having the info to file with a police report should significantly increase the odds of getting the device back in your hands, which can save a lot of hassle — as well as money, given the punitive rates many carriers charge for a mid-contract phone replacement." -- Small Business Computing
